About

In the sun-scorched heart of Khorixas, where the desert meets ancient petrified forests, Stephen Mufunda coaxes forgotten tales from the grain of wood. A master carver with hands guided by generations, he transforms weathered timber into vibrant echoes of Africa - each curve, each line, a dialogue between past and present.

Stephen’s artistry is rooted in the whispers of the land: the crackle of camelthorn bark, the resilience of shepherd trees, the silent wisdom of San rock art. His chisel dances, not to erase, but to reveal - unearthing lions in knots, ancestral dances in burls, and constellations in the swirl of mahogany. Here, wood is not mere material; it is a living archive.

To own a Mufunda creation is to hold a fragment of Africa’s soul, carved not just by hand, but by heartbeat. Explore his gallery, and let the wood speak.

At Damaraland Sculptures, Stephen Mufunda’s carvings are living stories etched in Prosopis (camelthorn), Iron Wood, and Teak - each piece a dialogue between land, tradition, and heartbeat. Below are answers to the six questions we get asked most.

What types of wood do you use?

Stephen works exclusively with locally sourced Prosopis (camelthorn), the dense and lustrous Iron Wood, and durable Teak - chosen for their grain, longevity, and ability to capture fine detail.

How long does a typical sculpture take?

Depending on size and intricacy, a carving can take between two weeks and three months. Stephen lets the wood’s story guide the pace of each creation.

Can I commission a custom carving?

Yes! From wildlife motifs to abstract forms, Stephen collaborates with you from initial concept sketches through to the final polish, ensuring your vision comes alive.

How should I care for my sculpture?

Avoid direct sunlight and extreme humidity. Dust lightly and apply a coat of natural beeswax oil once or twice a year to maintain its sheen and protect the fibers.

Do you ship internationally?

We ship worldwide. Each sculpture is carefully crated and insured; shipping fees vary by destination and size - contact us for a personalized quote.

Are studio visits or workshops available?

Private studio tours are offered by appointment. Seasonal carving workshops let you learn firsthand how to coax stories from wood under Stephen’s guidance.
